From AV Multi to Stick Stick: The most strange ports in Sony history

August 12, 2025
Reading Time: 3 mins read

Sony not only shows the praiseworthy ability to produce really breakthrough products to the market, such as the original Walkman and PlayStation players, but also aspire to create unnecessary exclusive accessories and standards. And if Blu-ray discs find their cavity, many ports are invented by Sony. Information port Howtogek.com speak About their most unsuccessful things.

From AV Multi to Stick Stick: The most strange ports in Sony history

By many

AV Multi first appeared on the PlayStation 1 dashboard, where it was used to transmit the same signal from the device to the PC. Sony has also built it in PlayStation 2 and 3. During his life, he is still an exclusive connector for gaming devices, although according to some information, it is also used in some Japanese TVs.

Note that Sony is not the only company to come in this way. Microsoft checked something similar to the Xbox 360 and Nintendo with Wiiu, supporting the same output when released in 2012. At that time, AV Multi was not just an acceptable port, especially if you consider synthetic signals, S-Video, RGB and component signals.

Sony Ericsson CST-15

The CST-15 connector, appeared on Sony Ericsson, was famous in the 2000s until the dawn of modern smartphones. There was nothing to praise the CST-15, but at that time, almost every mobile phone manufacturer used one or other exclusive chargers, because then USB charging devices were not standardized between brands.

10 -foot camera A/v.

Typically, to transmit the same signal from the mobile video camera on the TV or the recording machine, the RCA cable is required-a yellow connector for a synthetic video, white and red cables-left and right audio channels. But the position of three separate gates on the video camera took over too much space and Sony decided to do another.

A place where many other manufacturers have used 3.5 mm connectors, the Japanese corporation has created a 10 -leg port. Moreover, he has used until now: Even the “latest” cameras on Sony's official website supports him. But now they are no longer produced, and the cable needs to be purchased separately.

Digital vehicle port gate

Sony started using the DMP port on audio -visual receivers in early 2007, and opened some accessories: from Bluetooth converter to the connection station for iPod and Walkman. Although, in fact, DMP is a similar substance of USB, which the company has imported just to transfer compatible products to an exclusive connector.

Charger PlayStation Vita cable

PS Vita, published in 2011, is the heir of PlayStation Portable, one of the most popular mobile gaming devices in history. But for some reasons, Sony has decided that the newness must use exclusive cable, also needed to transfer files between the device and PC. Again, Nintendo acted in the same way as DS and 3DS, but both companies have no reason in 2010, the Micro USB standard has been established for a long time. But, in fairness, Sony has fixed the problem by translating PS Vita Slim to Micro USB.

Memory memory card

Stick-SSONY sticks to create a separate format of a removable drive, first made in 1998. Technically, they can be attributed to discharging the media, but it is important to remember that many laptops and other Sony products receive special ports for memory bars. The company occupies such a dominant position in the market that it can afford to release a series of suspicious products from the moral point of view.

Previously, PSP or Sony Ericsson mobile phone simply had no options – if they want to have more memory, they have to buy memory memory cards. Sony, of course, used this: Exclusive memory card is much more expensive than SD cards and compactflash drives.
