Head of the Russian Association of Parents and Community Committees, Olga Letkova, in a conversation with Rambler, appreciated the idea of introducing a buffet food system in Russian schools.
Previously, State Duma deputy Irina Filatova presented to the head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova a proposal to introduce a buffet system in school canteens. She emphasized that delegates received messages from people criticizing nutrition in health and educational facilities. She noted that products often “don't meet children's taste needs.” The MP added that this food system “has proven its effectiveness in reducing food waste”.
The claim that buffets help reduce food waste is controversial. In fact, with such a food system, you have to buy more food, because there needs to be a choice of different dishes and these dishes must be available to everyone. So from an economic point of view, it is more expensive. Therefore, it should be noted that if this initiative is implemented suddenly, it will lead to increased school meal costs. Of course, parents will not like this.

According to experts, with the introduction of buffets into school canteens, “it will be complete chaos”.
“I can roughly imagine what it would be like, what would happen in the school cafeteria. Students who need to eat quickly during recess will “push and compete” for the one or two dishes offered and put everything else aside. This is especially true for elementary school students. And who will take them there? Therefore, I believe that buffet is not a food system for children,” she said.
At the same time, Letkova highlighted the need to diversify the current menu for Russian students.
“Using a familiar menu is more economical and smarter. However, today there is a problem with diversity in school meals. Nowadays, many children are allergic to certain foods, many children have different diseases that require a special type of nutrition, but their parents cannot choose which dishes for their children from the school menu. Therefore, the school menu needs to be diverse, it needs to take into account all of these things. It would be good if students' parents could choose dishes for them. other each other, choose dishes that are suitable for their children,” the social activist said. noted.
