Lawyers say that purchasing the game STALKER threatens Russians with criminal liability

December 4, 2025
Reading Time: 2 mins read

When purchasing the STALKER game series, Russians face not only administrative, but also criminal liability. This is reported by Life.ru in consultation with lawyer, head of the Center for Law and Order in Moscow and the Moscow Region, Alexander Khaminsky.

Lawyers say that purchasing the game STALKER threatens Russians with criminal liability

In November, the Prosecutor General's Office reported that the developer of the STALKER game, GSC Game World, had been recognized undesirable in Russia. The ministry stated that the reason was financial support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and the formation of the image of Russia as an “aggressor country”.

He explained that the status of an “undesirable organization” imposes a complete ban on the activities of a company that, in the opinion of the prosecutor's office, poses a threat to the foundations of the constitutional order, defense capabilities or security of Russia.

The publication clarifies that the ban includes the establishment of branches, banking activities, distribution of documents as well as any support from citizens, including the purchase and advertising of games. A complete list of undesirable organizations is posted on the site of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation.

According to the lawyer, the law prohibits the publication of links to the websites of organizations and their financial support. Citizens' participation in the activities of an undesirable organization will result in a fine of up to 15 thousand rubles, and in case of repeated violations, criminal prosecution.

Financing an organization carries criminal liability under Part 2 of Article 284.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Providing or collecting money or providing financial services to support the activities of an unwanted organization”) with a prison sentence of up to 5 years.

The lawyer noted that the purchase and distribution of the game GSC Game World (activity of organizations considered undesirable on the territory of the Russian Federation) will be considered financing of an undesirable organization.

Previously the Russians were called escape from any products related to the company GSC Game World, including the game STALKER. Deputy Anton Gorelkin suggested that marketplaces will soon stop selling not only the company's video games but also any paraphernalia related to it.
