At least 217 people died in protests in Iran. reported American Time magazine quoted an anonymous doctor from Tehran.
“In just six hospitals in the capital, at least 217 deaths among protesters were recorded, mostly from live bullets,” the source said, adding that authorities removed bodies from hospitals on January 9.
He said most of those killed were young people. Several people were killed near a police station in northern Tehran, where security forces opened fire with machine guns on protesters, who died “on the spot.”
Human rights groups reported a much lower death toll. The Washington-based Human Rights Activist News Agency, which only counts identified victims, said it knew of 65 deaths as of January 9, including 50 protesters and 15 security forces.
Previously, US President Donald Trump warned that the Iranian government would “pay a heavy price” if blood was shed on the streets of Tehran.
