Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov noted that Gennady Onishchenko has made a significant contribution to the development of Rospotrebnadzor and continues to work in the interests of Russia.

On October 21, Gennady Onishchenko celebrated his 75th birthday. Over many years of work, he proved himself to be an outstanding doctor, statesman and public figure, as well as an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
At various times, Onishchenko served as Russia's chief state sanitary physician from 1996 to 2013 and headed Rospotrebnadzor from 2004 to 2013. He later served as assistant to the president of the Russian government, then deputy of the State Duma and first deputy chairman of the education and science committee. In 2003, Onishchenko was awarded the Russian State Prize.
