With climate change, summer rainfall is becoming heavier, longer and more intense, with large amounts of rain falling in short periods of time. The same trend is observed in winter: southern storms bring increasing amounts of precipitation. This was pointed out by the head of the Meteo forecast center, Alexander Shuvalov.

The expert noted that currently, data has appeared that in terms of rainfall intensity, this storm that hit Russia during the New Year holidays ranks fifth in the entire 146-year observation period.
“However, southern tornadoes in winter are an almost annual phenomenon. At the same time, such intensity of these tornadoes has become a feature of recent years, indicating the increasing intensity of anomalous natural phenomena,” the forecaster added.
